GRADE K – 2 Teacher Associates

Do you want to become a K -2 teacher?

If you are working within the field of education; working in a community-based-organization that works with elementary school aged children or have experience relevant to assisting in the classroom, then consider becoming a Teacher Associate at The Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School. The Teacher Associate works collaboratively with the classroom teacher to ensure that Banneker students thrive academically, socially and emotionally. This position is well suited to a person that is considering becoming a classroom teacher and wants exposure to the real world of the classroom working in a very high performing, high expectations school, predominantly serving students of color working within a very inclusive school community. Many of the long tenured teachers at Banneker started their careers as a Teacher Associate.

Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting small groups, whole class, or individual students as directed by the classroom teacher
  • Preparing lesson plans in assigned areas as directed by classroom teacher
  • Planning, preparing, and developing various teaching aids
  • Assisting with Preparing, administering, and grading examinations
  • Assisting in maintaining an orderly classroom and supporting school-wide discipline process
  • Assisting in conferences with parents on progress of students
  • Performing administrative duties as requested by the classroom teacher or Executive Director
  • Supervises lunch and recess. All teaching associates are expected to attend staff meetings and cluster meetings (when possible).

The Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School, located in Cambridge, is celebrating 25 years of educating children in Massachusetts. From the start, in 1996, community leaders and parents knew that there had to be a better way to provide students with a culturally affirming yet rigorous education. Their objective in creating such a school was to ensure that students would leave the Banneker with a culturally rich and academically strong foundation that would provide a path for future success. The results have been well validated, with overall proficiency scores of nearly 20 percentage points above the Massachusetts state averages for ELA, Math, and Science.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required MA Certification Highly Desired
  • Experience in education preferred
  • Effective oral, written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other staff
  • Enjoy working with and for children in grades K – 6
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
